The following
was sent to me by a student from 2004 who wants to tell her story of
how she found somewhere to work in Oshawa.
Less
than a year ago I took 2 ladies out to lunch. One owned a financial
company, and the other (an acquaintance of mine) worked for an
affiliate company. The lunch was casual, un-marred by agendas, and
really chatty. They were interested in the treatments I offered and I
came prepared to share pamphlets and philosophies in a low-key way. I
half jokingly confessed that what I needed was a business who was
willing to give me an office in lieu of weekly treatments for their
staff, or customers. We laughed about the barter system in the
financial world and the ladies encouraged me to never repeat the wish
on the grounds that it sounded desperate and unorthodox.
At the time
it was clear to me that the staff at this particular business was
under tremendous chaotic pressure from chronic stress which was
taking it's toll on the working climate as well as the staff. This
led to a discussion about 'lunch & learn' workshops re: wellness
that never came to fruition BUT circumstances shifted: the affiliate
company parted ways which left the financial company with spare rooms
and more pressure.
I kept in
touch the whole time and one day it happened. The owner approached
me. I now am the proud partner of a wonderful barter arrangement. I
setup an online calendar and the secretary books the appointments...
every Thursday (from 1 to 4) I work with the staff in whatever way
they choose (Reflexology, Therapeutic Touch or Bach Flower Remedies).
In return, I have a key to the building, open use of a boardroom and
a small workshop room.
Well done to
Barbara McKenzie!

Newsletter - Fall 2009
|
|
Greetings,
Well
I can't believe that its a year since I sent the first newsletter out
and hopefully you have enjoyed receiving them and found them
useful. I am always looking for ideas from you as my creative
brain sometimes needs a little help!
I
have a feeling it will be busy for everyone this fall, I have
certainly noticed a change in tempo and hope we are all feeling
positive towards a good economic recovery for all who have been
affected.
We
had a very successful first Indian Head Massage course and it will be
offered twice a year from now on.
All
the course dates for next year are posted on the website and please
note that we have tax changes to contend with in Ontario from July
1st so it will affect any payments after that date.
Enjoy
the changing season and hope you all have a healthy and happy fall.

Reiki
For those of you who havent experienced Reiki, or
indeed are not already practising the treatment, then it is one of
those therapies that probably complements Reflexology better than
anything else.
Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and
relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by
"laying on hands" and is based on the idea that an unseen
"life force energy" flows through us and is what causes us
to be alive. If one's "life force energy" is low, then we
are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are
more capable of being happy and healthy.
The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words - Rei which means
"God's Wisdom or the Higher Power" and Ki which is
"life force energy". So Reiki is actually "spiritually
guided life force energy."
Reiki is a simple, natural and safe method of
spiritual healing and self-improvement that everyone can use. It has
been effective in helping virtually every known illness and malady
and always creates a beneficial effect. It also works in conjunction
with all other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve side
effects and promote recovery.
There are many instructors and practitiones out there
- so check it out in your local alternative health magazine and start
practising.

Gift
Certificates
|
|
Gift Certificates are a great way of introducing a new
client to your business. So lets think of a few ways you could
introduce more clients to your business by offering gift
certificates:
- You
could give your client's an incentive to buy a gift certificate,
maybe give them a discount.
- Remind
them all the time that people are celebrating birthdays,
anniversaries, showers, special days, special events.
- Fundraising
events are always looking for different ideas, why not a gift
certificate
- Schools
and charities are always looking for different ways to make
money
- Look
at your local neighbourhood, or town where you live - what
events are happening this fall
"If a person gives you his time, he can give you
no more precious gift"

First
Aid/CPR
I recently attended
a three hour session of Emergency First Aid/CPR level C which I found
extremely informative. It was at least five years since I had
done any formal first aid training, and was surprised to learn how
little I could remember and how many protocols had changed.
I feel very
strongly that as therapists working every day with members of the
public it is our duty to make sure we are fully armed with as much
knowledge that could assist us in helping our clients.
The company was VO2
Health Focus and they carry out 3 hour, 1 day or 2 day programmes to
certify people for different levels of First Aid knowledge.
From January 2010
it will be mandatory for students to achieve level A in First
Aid/CPR.
I am hoping to
offer some dates for you this fall, certainly in Toronto at first, so
please contact me if you are interested.
Remember, you could be instrumental in helping to
save someone's life
